A Layered Approach is a dynamic collection of additively formed organic-inspired ceramic works of art. The premise of this show is simple: two artists whose work is united by the use of the ceramic sculpting technique of coiling. It is one of the foundational techniques used in ceramics and is a construction process wherein thin layers of wet clay continuously wrap around a void to create an intended form. Each layer is dependent on the layer below to support the structure above. Both artists in this exhibition celebrate the building process in their work by revealing the coiling process in the final pieces. Where they differ is Soucy’s use of traditional hand-building techniques and Peters’ use of digital modeling and 3D printers. The exhibition creates a dialog between the work and encourages visitors to enjoy their similarities and differences.
